Who We Are

The Ackerman Institute for the Family was founded in 1960 and is one of the premier institutions for family therapy treatment, and one of the most highly regarded training facilities for family therapists in the United States. The Institute serves a diverse population of families at all stages of family life by offering a variety of programs that address a broad range of issues and concerns. The faculty at the Institute have achieved national prominence and earned national awards for the development of innovative approaches to family therapy and professional training.

The Gender & Family Project’s (GFP) mission is to empower youth, families, and communities by providing gender affirmative services, training, and research. Founded in 2010, GFP promotes gender inclusivity as a form of social justice in all the systems involved in the life of the family.

Position Summary

The Gender and Family Project (GFP) is seeking one research intern to support multiple projects focusing on the needs of Black and Latine trans and gender expansive (TGE) youth and their families. The intern will assist with a systematic review, a review of the service landscape, the development of a qualitative study and the development of new clinical and non-clinical interventions for this population. This intern will be expected to devote 3-4 hours per week to support these projects, including weekly meetings with GFP’s Research and Training Coordinator and occasional meetings with other collaborators. This is a 9-month position with no guarantee of renewal. Black, indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities may include:

  • Participating in a systematic review of literature on Black and Latine TGE youth with a focus on family- based interventions

  • Participating in a search for clinical and non-clinical services across the U.S. that focused on Black and Latine LGBTQ youth and their families

  • Developing an IRB Protocol for a qualitative study (e.g., interviews and focus groups) of Black and Latine families with TGE youth

  • Creating interview and focus group materials for qualitative study

  • Reviewing clinical best practices for family therapy interventions with TGE youth, Black and Latine families, and other related populations

  • Attending research analysis training sessions led by Research & Training Coordinator

  • Reviewing research materials and creating Jotforms for participant submissions

  • Drafting summaries, reports or publications for GFP projects

  • Identifying professional conferences to present GFP’s work

  • Maintaining and organizing research files

  • Other duties as assigned

Responsibilities may vary depending on organizational needs and the progress of each project.

Qualifications

Though the position is remote, the individual must be based in New York state for the purpose of compensation.

  • Current undergraduate/graduate students, or early career professionals in the fields of psychology, social work or related disciplines.

  • Self-motivated and eager to learn.

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.

  • Commitment to Ackerman Institute values of inclusion, collaboration, and transparency.

Ideal candidates will have experience or a strong interest in:

  • Working with trans and gender non-conforming clients

  • Support services, clinical work, and other interventions for trans youth and their families

  • Presenting at research conferences

  • Conducting literature reviews

  • Using research software for quantitative or qualitative analysis (e.g., SPSS, R, NVivo)

Compensation

  • The intern will be compensated a total of $3,000 for the 9 month internship.

  • Payments of $1,000 will be made at 3 month intervals (e.g., December 2025, March 2026, July 2026)
