The Ackerman Institute for the Family was founded in 1960 and is one of the premier institutions for family therapy treatment, and one of the most highly regarded training facilities for family therapists in the United States. The Institute serves a diverse population of families at all stages of family life by offering a variety of programs that address a broad range of issues and concerns. The faculty at the Institute have achieved national prominence and earned national awards for the development of innovative approaches to family therapy and professional training.

The Gender & Family Project’s (GFP) mission is to empower youth, families, and communities by providing gender affirmative services, training, and research. Founded in 2010, GFP promotes gender inclusivity as a form of social justice in all the systems involved in the life of the family.

Position Summary

Ackerman Institute for the Family is seeking clinic interns who will support and provide family therapy to Ackerman clients, including Gender & Family Project families with transgender and gender expansive youth. Clinic Interns are responsible for providing therapeutic services to families through the Ackerman Institute for the Family’s New York State Office of Mental Health. Qualified candidates will be fluent in discussing race, gender identity and other areas of marginalization and expected to work collaboratively, and provide clear, clinical documentation in a timely manner. Clinic Interns will get clinical and non-clinical hours towards social work licensure. LGBTQIA+ and Black, indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide weekly couple and family therapy for the Institute. Case load may also contain individual cases of family members who are already receiving family services in the clinic.

  • Provide minimum of 4 sessions per week and up to 20 sessions a week.

  • Maintain up-to-date, timely, electronic chart records that include treatment plans and session notes.

  • Must be available for clinical supervision for 2 hours a month, held bi-weekly.

  • Must be able to conduct tele-therapy.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Must have experience working with children, as well as their family members, from overburdened NYC school and community agency partners.

  • Must be well versed in issues related to race, gender identity and other areas of marginalization.

  • Must have knowledge and experience in working with LGBTQ+ youths.

  • Bilingual preferred, in English/Spanish.

  • Experience in social service setting with working knowledge of case management systems and planning techniques is preferred.

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.

  • Commitment to Ackerman Institute's values of inclusion, collaboration, and transparency.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
